Camp meeting is almost here but it is much more than an annual event. Camp meetings became a part of the American religious landscape during the second Great Awakening in the 19th century. They were intended to bring faith to unsettled parts of America where there were few ministers or churches. It was a simple service of music, prayer, and preaching. Many different denominations would participate with multiple services at the same time. The people attending would be from many classes and races. Meetings usually lasted two weeks and people came from miles around. The Bend Camp Meeting is among the oldest continual meetings in the country. When the Bend Camp Meeting started Texas was a new state and the Civil War had not started. The meeting continued through a Depression and two World Wars. Come be part of history!
